The Garden (1995) |
Between the Days (1998) |
The Garden is the debut album by Australian singer Merril Bainbridge, released in Australia in July, 1995 (see 1995 in music) by Universal Music. The album featues a cover of the Pet Shop Boys song Being Boring, but was changed into a ballad and the chorus of the Bee Gees song "I Started a Joke" was used for the bridge of the track "Sleeping Dogs". The album was successful for a debut album, debuting at number five on the Australian ARIA Charts and going double Platinum.
Bainbridge released four songs from the album as singles: "Mouth"; "Under the Water"; "Power of One"; "Sleeping Dogs". Mouth was the first single released and was Bainbridge's debut single hitting the charts all over the world, going to number one in Australia for six weeks and accrediting Platinum and top ten in the United States and accrediting Gold. Under the Water was her second single going top ten in Australia and going to the top one hundred on the United States. Power of One was released as the third single and was not as successful as her first two singles, only peaking in Australia at number twenty-one. The fourth and final song released from the album was the track Sleeping Dogs which peaked at number fifty-five in Australia.
In 1996, the album was nominated for two ARIA Awards which were Highest Selling Album for 1996 and Breakthrough Artist Album for 1996. The album did not win any of these awards but was the twenty-seventh highest selling album in Australia for 1995.
