TV.com summary

The Friday Night Project is a programme that first aired in the United Kingdom on Channel 4 in February, 2005.

Each week, regular hosts Justin Lee Collins and Alan Carr are joined by a celebrity guest host. These guests provide an opening monologue, are interviewed by Alan and Justin, and take questions from the studio audience. They also take part in comedy sketches, hidden camera stunts, and a game show where someone from the audience is selected to win prizes.

One part of the show, called "Who knows the most about the guest host", sees two teams competing to answer trivia questions about that week's guest host. The captain of that team (either Alan or Justin) then runs into their side of the audience, wearing a golden coat with hundreds of £5 notes attached to it. The audience must dive onto them and try to grab the money.

Music each week is provided by a weekly guest house band.

[edit] Games and features

[edit] Opening monologue

The host of the show opens it with a dialogue about the weeks news. He/she makes jokes of celebrity mistakes and often talks about Big Brother. They also use this time to introduce the show's guest band.

[edit] Friday Night News

This is the first significant feature. Alan Carr and the guest host sit at the news desk and read some of the weeks news. Then Alan expresses his own funny opinions on each piece and how badly they messed up on the decision. As well as this, Alan's "Topical Barometer" shows whether a piece of news is "going up" or "going down", and often attempts to turn it into a joke. With the "Topical Barometer", Alan usually makes an innuendo about his penis. On the show on the 25th August 2006 Sarah Harding was the "Topical Barometer".

[edit] Who knows the most about the guest host?

In this section, the guest host hosts his/her own quiz. With two teams consisting of Alan and a celebrity and Justin and a celebrity try to answer questions about the guest host. If Alan's team win, then he runs into his side of the audience with "The Coat of Cash" whilst audience members try to get money off of the jacket which is usually £5 notes. The same happens if Justin's team wins.

[edit] Celebrity spotting with Debra Stephenson

In earlier editions from the first series Lucy Montgomery toured the streets where the guest presenter grew up in trying to find celebrity lookalikes. For the following series, she was replaced by Debra Stephenson who tours the streets of England (usually filmed in Manchester). She then embarrasses herself by confronting them and asking them to do or say something that the celebrity is famous for. Also, from time to time, she will ask them "Is it true?" about a recent story hitting the headlines. This section is sometimes done by another person that is well-known at the current time, such as Nikki Grahame and Chantelle Houghton when Debra is unavailable due to Coronation Street filming commitments.

[edit] Famous five

This is the finale of the show where the guest host picks someone from the audience which meet certain specifications set by Alan and Justin such as "Who looks the most like a rockstar?" Then the guest host answers 5 different style questions such as guessing who Alan is when he is dressed up and doing an impression and guessing the answer to a question posed by "Stephen Hawking".

[edit] Trivia

  • The Friday Night Project is not live, as they record the show at The London Studios on Thursday evening. To seem authentic, the show does multiple recordings of the intro so that they have correctly predicted the evictee/ winner of Big Brother.
  • The web and print publishing company The Friday Project alleges that the series stole its name from their site, or at least failed to check in Google first. This has led to The Friday Project creating a spoof site displaying mis-spelt feedback from Friday Night Project viewers and Justin Lee Collins Fans. A common feature of The Friday Thing email newsletter they produce is a selection of some of the most idiotic emails intended for The Friday Night Project.
  • There has only been one episode where a solo singer has been the musical guest on the show. That was Moby, in the fifth episode of the first series. In every other episode, bands featured as the musical guests.
  • On the episode that aired on the 11th August 2006 (S03, E09) The Automatic became the first, and so far only, band to have appeared twice as the Guest Band.
  • The 25th August 2006 episode (S03, E11) was the first to be guest hosted by more than one person - Cheryl Cole, Kimberley Walsh and Sarah Harding from Girls Aloud.
