The Farming of Bones is the story of a young Haitian, Amabelle Desir and her country-mates in the Dominican Republic. Amabelle works as a housemaid to a landowner, Don Ignacio, common among the Haitians. Amabelle and her lover Sebastian must flee to Haiti as the Dominican Republic government begins a massive genocide of Haitians to "cleanse the country". The core of the story includes the pronunciation of parsley or "perejil" to further divide the Haitians from the Dominicans. The story follows Amabelle's attempts to reach Haiti, depecting many horrifying acts along the way, and the ramifications of the massacres on the lives of Haitians and Dominicans after the act.
