[edit] Plot

Dan Harrow (Henry Fonda) works along the Erie Canal during the mid-19th century to raise money to buy a farm. While working, he meets Molly Larkins, a beautiful canal boat cook (Janet Gaynor) Harrow wants to marry Larkins, but she's apprehensive about leaving the exciting canal life for one of a farmer's wife.

[edit] Reception

The play was well-received upon its opening night on October 30, 1934 at the 46th Street Theater. Thanks to its success, the film was later produced by 20th Century Fox under the supervision of Winfield Sheehan and direction of film veteran Victor Fleming. While the film adaptation wasn't successful, it launched the career of Henry Fonda (who reprised his stage role for the film).
