A promo CD was completed in mid-2003 and The Eternal began work on their debut album in November 2003 for release through Finnish label Firebox Records. Just prior to this, bassist Paul Tipping was replaced by James Hunt.
Guitarist Chris Burton left The Eternal shortly after the album's release and was replaced by Mat Castles, formerly of Ne Plus Ultra for shows in Europe and Hong Kong. Upon the band's return to Australia, drummer Ryan Buesnel left the band.
Their album, The Sombre Light of Isolation features guest vocals from Darren White (ex-Anathema, The Blood Divine) and blends the best elements of mid-to-late Katatonia with classic My Dying Bride and elements of Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd into a fine album of majestic atmospheric doom.
The Sombre Light of Isolation was voted into the Top 5 Australian metal albums of the year by listeners of the Triple J network's Full Metal Racket in late 2004. During the year, Kelson played a few shows as the bass player with Black Majesty.
In early 2005, it was announced that drummer Marty O'shea and former Mortification guitarist Lincoln Bowen had joined The Eternal. The band finished recording a second album in May 2005. Sleep of Reason was released worldwide in late 2005. O'Shea left the band at the end of 2005 and was replaced by Pete Marin of Melbourne prog-rock band, Template.
In March 2006 the band supported Finnish cult dark rock group H.I.M. on the Australian leg of their 'Dark Light' tour.
In April 2006 the band supported legendary Swedish metal band Opeth on their Australian tour.
On September 13 2006 it was announced that bassist James Hunt would leave The Eternal to persue his career as an Agricultural Scientist.
Kelson is also involved with Insomnius Dei.
