The Engagement is the first episode of the television series The Golden Girls. It first aired on NBC on September 14, 1985.

Blanche comes home to tell Rose and Dorothy that her boyfriend, Harry,has asked her hand in marriage. Soon after, Dorothy's mother Sophia arrives at the girls' doorstep when her retirement home, Shady Pines, burns down.
Amidst all the wedding preparations,Rose soon realizes that there's something about Harry she doesn't trust.
On the wedding day, a policeman shows up and explains to Blanche that Harry is a bigamist and has been arrested. The others help console Blanche,who a few days later, starts to feel better.

- Charles Levin,who plays the gay cook, Coco, was supposed to be a series regular, but was cut from the series after the first episode.
- Estelle Getty was originally intended to make regular guest appearances on the show as Sophia,
but she proved to be so popular that she became a series regular.
- Designing Women's Meshach Taylor plays the cop who tells Blanche about Harry.
