The Daily Cougar is a daily newspaper run entirely by students at the University of Houston in Houston, Texas USA.

In publication since 1934, The Daily Cougar is one of only two independent daily college newspapers in Texas. The Daily Cougar staff take pride in the paper's roles both as a student-managed forum for the university community and in its role as the source of campus news for students, faculty, staff, and administrators at UH.

The Daily Cougar publishes Monday through Friday during the school year, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the Summer, though it has run Mondays and Wednesdays in previous summers. The Cougar also maintains a website in which content is distributed electronically online on a daily basis.

[edit] History

The Daily Cougar was founded in 1934 by University of Houston students.

During Tropical Storm Allison in 2001, the newsroom was severely damaged, yet the staff continued production of the newspaper as scheduled (on a summer schedule) in the cramped quarters of the business office, which sustained only minimal damage.

As of 2003, The Daily Cougar was Houston's second largest English-language daily newspaper, with a circulation approaching of nearly 12,000 and a readership approaching 40,000.

[edit] Newspaper staff

As of May 2006, The Daily Cougar consisted of:

  • Managing Editor: Matt Dulin
  • News Editor: Johnny Peña
  • Opinion Editor: Robyn Morrow
  • Sports Editor: Chris Elliott
  • Life & Arts Editor: Fabian Sifuentes

The paper is printed in a facility located on the UH campus, and is circulated on campus and mailed to subscribers.

[edit] Criticism

The September 15, 2005 editorial cartoon [1], which portrayed Hurricane Katrina refugees in an unfavorable light, evoked criticism from readers who considered it "racist". The cartoon was removed from the online database and replaced with the same editorial cartoon from September 16, 2005. [2] Subsequent efforts and calls for the Editor-in-Chief Matt Dulin and Opinion Editor James Davis to resign proved fruitless.

[edit] Trivia

Various games have been invented in the newsroom, such as "Googly," which involved a 5-gallon water jug and a 4" ball. The search engine Google was not involved.

The Daily Cougar, with the exception of a syndicated crossword puzzle, contains 100 percent student produced content.
