The Craic of Dawn

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Craic of Dawn is a show on the student-based radio station Flirt FM, which broadcasts out of Galway, Ireland, on 105.6 MHz.[1] The show is currently in its second season, and can be heard every Tuesday morning from 08:00 to 10:00 (GMT). During it first season The Craic of Dawn could be heard on Wednesday mornings at the same time.

The Craic of Dawn became very popular amongst the student listeners of Flirt FM when it first appeared in September, 2004. Its mix of popular music and the light-hearted banter of the three main presenters proved a winning formula. In 2005 the show was nominated for a Smedia award (Irish Student Media Awards) for Best Arts Radio Feature, but lost out to Goodbye Blue Sky from Ballyfermot college. [2]

[edit] The Presenters

The presenters of The Craic of Dawn are Conall O Riain, Kathryn O'Shea, and producer Andrew Gibbons. Where as Riain came to the show inexperienced in broadcasting, Gibbons had previously co-presented a current-affairs show on Flirt FM, and O' Shea had worked in Highland Radio, and BBC Radio Foyle.

As well as his part on The Craic of Dawn, O'Riain is also noted for his performance in the play Twist of Faith (an original college production), in which he play the role of God, and recently wrote and directed his own play Love, or Blood?, starring Liam Harkin.

Gibbons is also a regular contributor to other Flirt FM shows, and a writer and editor for Irish Youth Media Website, Spunout.ie [3]

[edit] The W Files

The W Files are one of the oldest and most popular features of The Craic of Dawn. Supposedly inspired by the current US President, the W Files are a collection of the more unusual news stories from around the world. Past stories have included reports on 'stoned' monkeys and blind car thieves. Commenting on the creation of the W Files, Gibbons called them "a moment of inspired lunacy ... the kind of idea that you would have at four in the morning after a few drinks ...".
