The Codex (novel)

The Codex is a 2004 novel by Douglas Preston and takes place in the Southwest United States. Max Broadbent is an eccentric, rich man with terminal cancer who likes to collect valuable art and treasures. One day, he packs up his valuables and vanishes, leaving his three sons a cryptic message as to his location. The son that finds him receives all the treasures. They each go their separate ways after figuring that their father is somewhere in Central America. A greedy head of a failing drug company, a ruthless private investigator (who was once friends with their father), a greedy leader of a cult, and a beautiful ethnobotanist are brought into the fray.
