Reasons for Box Office Failure There are many reasons why this film was not as successful as had been hoped, some of these reasons include: The filmmaker's instead of following Auel’s novel, which has the characters speaking English so that the audience knew what was going on, used their own language. This is translated for the audience with subtitles.
The film also switches around too much trying to make the audience keep watching (not only does this confuse the audience) but it turns out to be boring anyway and in the end Jean.M.Auel was so embarrased by this film that she sued the producers who made the movie for a US $40 million.
