The City Ring is a future expansion of the Copenhagen Metro. It is not yet decided by law but construction is intended to begin in 2009 and end in 2017. Cost is estimated at €2 billion.

[edit] Stations and route

The City Ring is going to serve around 17 stations. The ring will intersect the M1 and M2 lines at Kongens Nytorv and Frederiksberg stations. The Metro will also reach the Nørrebro area and the Copenhagen Central Station.

Initially, two possible routes were considered, after an even bigger screening of ideas. In December 2005, the Copenhagen and Frederiksberg municipalities selected the Frederiksberg route. The purpose is to cover areas not yet serviced by S-trains or Metro.

The city ring is going to influence a lot of the current transportation system in Copenhagen, and it is believed that most buses in the inner city will disappear.

The ring will serve two lines, M3 and M4. They run on the same tracks, but M3 will run on the entire ring, where M4 will shuttle in around half of the ring, to equalize the amount of passengers in the busiest part of the ring. The M4 is planned to extend to the suburbs of metropolitan Copenhagen in future.

[edit] Construction

Most likely, the upcoming city ring will have the same design and structure as the current metro. The trains are also likely going to be the same type as the current trains.
