"The Circus" was the fourth single, and the title-track, released from Erasure's second album. Mute Records issued the single in 1987 as the final release from the album. "The Circus" is written by Erasure members Vince Clarke and Andy Bell and creates a more downtempo and melancholy mood than their past singles. Essentially a synth pop track, the music is accentuated by acoustic guitar and circus-like accordion.
The lyrics center around the lament of "working men" whose bright futures and job securities are left shattered in the modern world of greedy corporations and technology. Despite its lyrical content, "The Circus" became Erasure's third UK top ten hit, peaking at number six. In Germany, the single hit number thirty.
