[edit] Plot
Scott stars as Dr. John Russell, a music professor living in upstate New York, who moves cross-country to Washington state following the tragic deaths of his wife and daughter in a traffic accident while on a winter vacation. In suburban Washington, Russell rents a large, old, and eerie-looking Victorian mansion and attempts to piece together his life. However, Dr. Russell soon discovers that he has unexpected company in his new home when the ghost of a long murdered child haunts the house, shattering windows and abruptly opening and shutting doors. Russell investigates and finds that the mystery is linked to a powerful US senator.
[edit] Trivia
- The Changeling's influence can be seen in more recent haunted house/supernatural films. For example, its seance scene is similar to that shown in the climax of The Others (2001). The reflection-in-the-tub scene in What Lies Beneath (2000) and several elements from The Ring (2002) are similar to those in this movie.
- The name of the house caretaker in the film - Mr Tuttle - is also the name of the caretaker in The Others (2001)
- George C. Scott's co-star in the movie is Trish Van Devere, his real-life wife.
