The Centre (Saskatoon)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Centre (full name The Centre at Circle and 8th) is a shopping centre located at the junction of Circle Drive and 8th Street in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. It is anchored by Zellers, Sportchek, Safeway, Rainbow (a second-run cinema) and the Centre Cinemas, Petcetera, and Shoppers Drug Mart. Until 2002-2003, Canadian Tire and Wal-Mart were also part of this mall. They both moved to the big box development of Preston Crossing. The Centre boasts more than 90 shops and services, 9 fine art galleries in Centre East, and a 2-level temperature controlled underground parkade.
The Centre was created in the mid-1990s through the amalgamation of Wildwood Mall (built in the late 1970s) and Circle Park Mall (built in the mid-1980s, but see below), which were separated by Acadia Drive. When both malls were bought by the same company, they were connected by an underground link. The two "sides" of the mall are now known as "Centre East" and "Centre West".
The former Circle Park Mall section (now Centre West) was a reconstruction of an earlier shopping centre called County Fair Plaza which was built on the site in the late 1960s and consisted of Zellers and Safeway as well as a few smaller shops. In the early 1980s, the mall underwent extensive renovation and expansion and became Circle Park Mall.
