Deep in the Romanian forest, a team of scientists stumbles upon the ruins of a 13th century abbey. On further inspection, they make a startling discovery - the abbey is built over the entrance to a giant underground cave system. These scientists are Dr. Nicolai (Iures) and his associate Bacovia Radescu. Local biologists believe the cave could contain an undiscovered ecosystem, so they hire a group of American spelunkers to help them investigate its depths. Also tagging along is cameraman Alex Kim (Daniel Kim)

Jack (Cole Hauser) and his brother Tyler (Eddie Cibrian) are the thrill-seeking professional cave explorers hired by the scientists. The two run a team of the top divers in the world. They arrive in Romania with the latest equipment, including a new type of scuba tank allowing a diver to remain submerged for up to 24 hours. The diving team, which includes Charlie, (Piper Perabo) Briggs, (Ravanello) sonar expert Strode, (Darcy-Smith) and Buchanan (Morris Chestnut), begins its exploration. In the cave, they discover bizarre creatures, and also a group of explorers from three decades ago, who are no longer quite human.

[edit] Similarities to other caving films

The Cave, The Descent, both released theatrically in 2005, and The Cavern on DVD in 2006. All three films involve spelunking and terrifying subterranean life that hunts down the principal characters. The Descent was held as the superior of the three according to ticket sales and critical reviews; however, The Cave was the only one of the three that was actually filmed inside a cave.
