The Cause of Suppression
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Cause of Suppression is a book compiled by the Church of Scientology using various writings by their founder, L. Ron Hubbard.
The book is part of the From the Scientology Handbook series of booklets, which reprint segments of the handbook in smaller format. [1]
The current edition's front cover depicts a man in a business suit walking in the middle of a dried-up lake bed under a fiery red sky, with an enormous shadow being cast by a giant humanoid figure just out of the image's range.

[edit] Suppressive Persons
The Cause of Suppression deals with Hubbard's controversial Suppressive Person concept. The Church's official glossary defines a suppressive person as being:
- a person who possesses a distinct set of characteristics and mental attitudes that cause him to suppress other people in his vicinity. This is the person whose behavior is calculated to be disastrous. Also called antisocial personality. [1]
The Church's Volunteer Ministers in Botswana, Africa provide one example of the book's use:
"An artist came to the Volunteer Ministers tent, she was not doing well in life and didn't not know why. But by taking "The Cause of Suppression" course, she was able to spot that some of her so-called friends were deliberately undermining her. Before the course she had not realized they did not have her best interests at heart. Now she can see who her real friends are and she is doing much better in life." [2]
