The Bund (Chinese: 上海灘; pinyin: Shàng Hǎi tān; lit. Shanghai Beach) was a classic 1980 TVB action series broadcast in Hong Kong, starring Chow Yun-Fat (Zhou Run-Fa) and Ray Lui Leung-Wai (Lv Liang-Wei) as triad members in prewar Shanghai and their struggle for power and survival. The pair were caught in a love triangle with the female lead Angie Chiu (Feng, Cheng-Cheng, by Zhao Ya-zhi).
Memorable scenes from the series include the wedding of Lui (Ding, Li) and Chiu's characters (Feng, Cheng-cheng), and the death of Chow's character (Xu Wen-qiang). These two scenes have subsequently been replicated and parodied in many movies and TV shows in Hong Kong. Also widely remembered is the show's theme song, a karaoke favourite among many in Hong Kong. Performed by Frances Yip (Ye, Li-yi), it was an early offering from the Gu Gaa-fai and Wong Jim collaboration.
His character having been killed off, Chow Yun-Fat did not return for the sequels The Bund II (except for a brief flashback cameo early in the second series) and III, however Lui Leung-Wai continued to play his signature role of Ding Lik (Ding, Li), a role he later returned to in unrelated movies.
The original series was remade in the late 1990s with Sunny Chan Kam Hung (capitalising on a passing resemblance to Chow Yun-Fat) in Chow's role of Hui Man Kueng and with Nnadia Chan in Chiu's role of Feng Ting Ting (Feng, Cheng-cheng).
