The Brunswick, Merthyr Tydfil

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Brunswick is a large bar and restaurant located in the town of Merthyr Tydfil,Wales.

Located in the town centre, the Brunswick was built in the early 1800s and is a fine example of the architecture of that period, comprising mostly of stone.

In the early 1900s, a small wooden chapel was built in the rear courtyard of the Brunswick. The chapel was frequented by a small group of baptists, living in Merthyr Tydfil at the time.

Despite many subsequent changes of ownership, the chapel remains to this day, although the external structure has been reinforced with brick and other more modern materials. The chapel is incorporated into the contemporary-styled bar area, which today occupies the ground floor.

The Brunswick was acquired, in 2004, by a Merthyr Tydfil company which subsequently embarked on a major refurbishment of the building's interior before re-opening the business as a wholly owned independent public house.

An oriental buffet restaurant, the first of its kind in Merthyr Tydfil, was opened on the previously under-utilised first floor.
