The Boogeyman

"The Boogeyman" is a short horror story by Stephen King and appears in his Night Shift collection.

The story takes place in a psychiatrist's office, as a disturbed man nervously explains to the doctor how his three children were killed one by one by what the man is convinced is a "boogeyman", a murderous creature that he believes hides in bedroom closets (as evidenced by the slightly-open closet door after each of their deaths).

The man's narrative portrays him as an irrational, backwards-attitude person, as King leads the reader into inferring that the man might be their killer, hoping to convince the doctor he is insane to beat a murder conviction. However, the story concludes as the man discovers too late that the boogeyman is in fact very real.
