Spencer Armacost (Depp) is a NASA astronaut who is on a routine mission in space when something goes horribly wrong and it looks as if he is doomed. He loses contact with Earth for two minutes along with his colleague Alex Streck (Cassavetes). They return home to their respective spouses, but Spencer's wife Jillian (Theron) sees a change in Spencer and becomes suspicious. She begins to question what happened in the time they lost contact. Jillian has suffered depression in the past and would like to start a family, so she is initially thrilled with Spencer's return to Earth. She also becomes pregnant but feels something out of this world is living inside of her. As her pregnancy advances, Jillian's anxienties increases, but has something really happened to Spencer, or have Jillian's old demons merely resurfaced?
