[edit] Task Dossier

  • The aim of this task was to create a graffiti advertisement in Harlem for Sony PlayStation 2's new racing simulator game, Gran Turismo 4
  • Each team were given a bare 20-foot wall
  • The teams were responsible for their graffiti ad design
  • The teams were to hire a graffiti artist
  • The winner was determined which Gran Turismo 4 ad was the most compelling one to help Sony sell the game.

[edit] Task Outcome

  • As Project Manager for Net Worth, Tara expressed much enthusiasm in her unique ability to create something that would enrich the community. She wanted to design an ad that would demonstrate the revitalization of Harlem. John questioned whether she was making a social statement or creating an ad design for a video game. Audrey and Craig clashed because Audrey felt that he was bossing her around and treating her like a child. Ultimately, the final result was not what Sony was looking for.
  • For Magna, Alex admitted to not being particularly hip or urban. He consulted with a group of local youth and young men about what they might enjoy seeing in an ad for the game. They provided him with several key ideas that made it into the final presentation. Overall, Magna's mural impressed Sony as it included key aspects of the game in its design, including a fist holding cash and a clearly visible 'E', the parental grading signifying that the game is for everyone.
  • Once in the boardroom, Donald showed video of the focus groups who gave their opinions of each ad. Magna impressed their social group who stated they were excited about the game. The group evaluating Net Worth, however, were confused as to what was being marketed. It wasn't clear to them what the ad was for, and to make matters worse for Tara, one gentleman stated that he didn't think it represented Harlem much at all. Magna was declared winner and sent off to be photographed by Patrick Demarchelier.
  • Trump rode by each site in his limousine. He got out at Net Worths and complimented the artistry of the project. He did not even stop at Magna's, just driving by. This gives the false impression that Net Worth will win the task.
  • Net Worth returned to the boardroom and proceeded to point fingers at one another over their loss. Tara blamed John and Audrey for not telling her that the game had different locations for the game and that if she had known, the ad would have "gone in a very different direction". Nevertheless, upon being questioned by George, Tara admitted to having a plan for the ad before ever meeting with the Sony executives. In what was considered a surprise move, Tara brought Craig along with Audrey into the boardroom. It appeared as if she were doing so for personal reasons because Craig, the other remaining African-American, didn't support her in the boardroom. When the three candidates for firing returned, Tara stated that she brought Craig in with her because he was essentially her "right hand man" and that had fought with Audrey and had failed to perform as expected. After some more mudslinging, Trump told Tara that she had made a huge miscalculation and had failed to understand the basic marketing aspects of the task. So, Trump fired Tara.
  • Fired: Tara for failing to understand the most rudimentary aspects of the task.
