[edit] Task Dossier
Because the Donald was off to a business trip, all the remaining candidates had to be briefed via video conferencing. The Donald is very good at giving out effective task dossiers via his limo--Task 4 involves working with Advertising Guru Donny Deutsch to create an advertising campaign for a new product from Dove: Cool Moisture Body Wash. Because Angie was the Project Manager of the winning team the task before this, she would be exempt if for any reason something happened to her. Others had to either do a very good job or face the wrath of the boardroom where (at least) one of them would be fired as promised by The Donald.
The teams were given a top-notch sound stage, film crew, equipment, seed money (with all remains and receipts returnable to The Trump Organization at the end of the task), and even models. The aim of this task is to create a 30-second industry-standard advertisement that would blow Mr. Deutsch away.
[edit] Task Outcome
[edit] Magna
Magna chose to make a commercial about making salad, replete with sexual innuendo and a same-sex twist at the end. The 'vegetable porn' idea was Bren's and he never lives it down, as it is mentioned a few times in the later episodes of the show. No one is there to meet the actors and one of them almost walks off in protest. Erin gets a 'deer in the headlights' look talking to the model but Bren calms her down. Erin realizes halfway through the shoot that the ad resembles soft core 'adult entertainment'. Only Michael was against this idea.
[edit] Net Worth
Net Worth's initial commercial concept featured a group of marathon runners grabbing cups to cool off. One runner grabs a bottle of the Dove product and rubs it into face before rinsing it off. Refreshed, he goes on to win the race. The idea was created by John and Craig, but as Kristin was the project manager, she 'took over' production from there and sent the two of them off to do the music for the commercial. As they drive away in the car they say something to the effect of 'I hope Kristin understands what we were talking about because it would be real easy to get it wrong, and it won't be good at all'.
Kristin felt that because her boyfriend was a director and she hung around sets a lot that she would be a good project manager. She treats the models and teammates with a lack of respect. She also has them put the body wash on their face, and when the model questions putting body wash on his face, she tells him it can be used for your face too; a blatant disregard of the intended use of the product. She then has the lead model wipe the body wash off his face with a towel, not even using water, despite the fact that the body wash is very much intended to be rinsed off after use.
[edit] D-Day with Deutsch
When it came time for both teams to present their final commercials before Donny Deutsch and his two trusted associates (Kathy Delaney and Val DiFebo), Magna presented their commercial first before Donny Deutsch. While Donny shook his head in dismay after seeing the commercial, he thanked Magna for their time and told Net Worth to present their commercial. Donny also seemed to be unhappy with the commercial, but thanked Net Worth for their time.
[edit] Double Disaster
During the decision-making duration of D-Day, Donny Deutsch told both Kathy and Val that neither commercials are airable and that he has nothing out of these commercials. Val cited that Magna's commercial makes her feel bad about being a woman and that she would not purchase Dove Cool Moisture Body Wash from Magna, neither her husband would do so. Val also agrees that Net Worth's commercial fails to focus on the intended purpose of the newest Dove product. Kathy also agreed with Val's and Donny's perception of the commercials, as she considers Magna's commercial inappropriate and also realizes that Net Worth didn't understand the product too well. Though Donny Deutsch hates to be harsh, he, Val, and Cathy declared that this task was a "Double Disaster."
Both Magna and Net Worth came back before Donny Deutsch and Donny placed The Donald on the line. Trump wants to know how the teams did. After a pause, Donny broke the silence, citing that he doesn't have a winner, that both commercials are horrible to his standards, and that he has nothing from the teams whatsoever. Donny officially declared a "Double Disaster."
After the declaration, The Donald declares an Apprentice First--He wants both teams to report back to the boardroom (No winner, No reward, period), with the exception of Angie, someone will get fired.
[edit] The Boardroom
This is the first time in the history of The Apprentice that both teams were called back into the Board Room. The Donald is angry at both teams.
[edit] Crazy and Disgusting
During the first stage of the boardroom, Trump wanted to see the commercials for himself through a plasma TV Screen. George and Carolyn can't believe their eyes about the commercials and The Donald agreed with Donny Deutsch's decision to declare double disaster--these ads were totally unairable. Carolyn cited Net Worth's commercial to be disgusting because there was a model that didn't understand the intended purpose of the body wash by Dove. Trump stated that Magna must be crazy about the Cucumber Porn/Gay Ending concept.
After the usual attempt to learn why each group failed so miserably, Trump had each Project Manager bring in their two choices for the final boardroom. Erin chose Michael and Bren, while Kristen chose Audrey and Tana. These 6 candidates were to remain in the lobby to face the wrath of The Donald.
[edit] The Firing
In the final boardroom, Trump focused on how poorly Kristen managed the individuals on her team. In contrast, he pointed out that Erin, the project manager for Magna, was able to keep her team on task. Kristen tried to defend her performance and blamed the loss on poor performances from her teammates who she claimed were "hard to lead". Both Audrey and Tana turned on her and blamed her for the commercial's inability to convey its original humorous message. Audrey and Tana also blamed her for changing the ending, so that the runner did not rinse off his face before moving on. The result deeply disturbed several people in the boardroom.
While The Donald was not pleased at Bren's "cucumber gay porn" idea, Mr. Trump was more concerned about Kristen's inability to keep her team together. Trump cited that a good leader always brings difficult people together, and while The Donald didn't like either commercial at all, the Book Smarts are safe due to the fact that Erin knew how to bring the team together.
The Donald, although he could have fired multiple candidates like in Season 2 (especially Erin, the other PM, or Bren, the creator of Magna's idea), opted to fire only Kristen, because of her inability to keep her team together.
After the candidates left, The Donald thought both commercials were horrible, and that Dove better make their own commercial. This episode also gained the attention of Dove.
