The Apple War

Äppelkriget (English title: The Apple War) is a Swedish comedy-drama film from 1971 directed by Tage Danielsson, starring Gösta Ekman, Hans Alfredsson, Tage Danielsson, Monica Zetterlund and Max von Sydow.

The political theme of the film is the battle between nature and industrialization, and the exploitation of land and natural resources. A German businessman wants to buy land in southern Sweden for his new project "Deutschneyland" (a sort of Disneyland); a gigantic amusement park. The locals think not and revolt. But they are not the only ones revolting... Mother Nature is quite put off too..!

The Apple War is a popular cult film in Sweden and often referred to, when spoken of, as a "Hasseåtage"-film, due to the creators Tage Danielsson (director of the film; also screenplay) and Hasse Alfredson (actor in the film and also screenplay) who for many years formed a popular comic duo with several films and revues, as well as work in radio and television. With much satire and political messages to their audience - but above all full with the playful, crazy and very goofy humor that so much signified their work. The feeling of a "Hasseåtage"-film is striking to most Swedes; the special humour, the use of actors (who often appeared in their other projects as well), the design of set decorations and costumes, etc (other popular films by Hasseåtage were Docking the Boat, The Adventures of Picasso, The Man Who Quit Smoking and Release the Prisoners to Spring).

Many of songs in The Apple War were composed and written by Evert Taube, who also makes a cameo in the film; the old man that dances with Monica Zetterlund at the end party (and while there also recites a part of his most famous song Calle Schewens vals, performed by the cast in the same scene at the end).
