The Amazing Race 9 | The Amazing Race 11 |
The Amazing Race 10 is the tenth installment of the popular reality television show, The Amazing Race. The Amazing Race 10 features twelve teams of two, with a pre-existing relationship, in a race around the world. Applications were accepted through January 20, 2006 (one week later than the original deadline). Semi-finalist interviews occurred in late February/early March, followed by finalist interviews in Los Angeles during late March and early April. Filming ran from May 27, 2006 to June 24, 2006. This installment ran from September 17, 2006 to December 10, 2006.
In the premiere episode, host Phil Keoghan promised new "twists and turns" that would be revealed throughout the season. The first of these twists was a double-elimination leg, the first in the show's history. The second was a change in the penalty to a last-place team on a non-elimination leg: rather than being stripped of their cash and possessions, they become "marked for elimination", meaning that unless they place first in the following leg, they receive a 30 minute penalty at the mat, possibly allowing teams finishing behind them to overtake them in the final placings for that leg. Leg 8 revealed another twist called the "Intersection", described as forcing teams to work together to complete tasks and making decisions until further notice. In the season finale on Sunday, December 10, 2006, Tyler and James finished first, with Rob and Kimberly in second. Lyn and Karlyn came in 3rd. After Tyler & James won The Amazing Race, they were told to call their families on the phone about winning the race.

Note 1: Leg 1 was a double-elimination leg. Bilal & Sa'eed were eliminated first halfway through the leg (see below note), while Vipul & Arti were eliminated at the Pit Stop.
Note 2: Bilal & Sa'eed were the last team to arrive at the Meridian Gate in the Forbidden City, where teams got start times for the next morning. There were only 11 times; they were eliminated in the middle of the leg.
Note 3: Kellie took, but failed to complete, the Roadblock in Leg 2. Already in last, Kellie & Jamie then checked into the Pit Stop and were eliminated.
Note 4: Tom & Terry arrived 2nd, but were assessed a 30 minute time penalty for traveling on motorbikes, which were prohibited to the racers for safety reasons.
Note 5: The Roadblock count does not include the results of any unaired Roadblocks.
Note 6: Due to an Intersection, two teams worked together to complete the Fast Forward and both were able to skip all remaining tasks and head to the Pit Stop.
Note 7: David & Mary arrived 5th, but were assessed a 30 minute penalty as they were "marked for elimination" and did not arrive at the Pit Stop in 1st. They were not, however, assessed the whole penalty as Lyn & Karlyn checked in 10 minutes after the penalty started.
Note 8: Leg 9 was double-length and shown over two episodes.
- Red means the team was eliminated.
- Purple means the team was the last to arrive at a pit stop in a non-elimination leg of the race and was thus "marked for elimination," meaning that if that team did not place first on the next leg, they would receive a 30 minute penalty. Contrary to prior seasons, they were neither stripped of their possessions nor money and they were able to receive money on the next leg.
- Green means the team won the Fast Forward clue.
- Matching colors of + symbols indicate teams who worked together during part of the leg as a result of the Intersection clue.
- A yellow > means that team chose to use the Yield; < indicates the team who received it;<> indicates a leg where the Yield was available but not used.

[edit] Trivia
[edit] General
- This is the first season to feature two Asian American teams: Erwin & Godwin (Korean American) and Vipul & Arti (Indian American). Kathy from Season 3 was until this season the only Asian American contestant in TAR history. This is also the first season to feature an African American Muslim team (Bilal & Sa'eed), an amputee (Sarah Reinertsen of Peter & Sarah, who has an artificial leg), and the race's first open lesbian (Lauren Marcoccio of Duke & Lauren).
- This is the first season to generally run the race from West to East, crossing the Pacific Ocean in the first leg. The first legs of previous seasons had teams crossing the Atlantic Ocean or staying on the North America/South America landmass first.
- Dustin-Leigh Konzelman and Kandice Pelletier are former Miss America contestants. Konzelman held the title Miss California 2005 and Pelletier was Miss New York 2005. The beauty queens are two among seven former pageant contestants to compete on The Amazing Race. One other Amazing Race competitor, Kelly McCorkle (Miss South Carolina 2002) of Season 7, has competed in Miss America.
- This is the third season to feature 12 teams, the other two being Season 3 and Season 4.
- This was the first season in which two teams were eliminated in the same leg. In the first leg, Bilal & Sa'eed were eliminated after arriving last at the Meridian Gate in order to secure a departure time the next morning. (They were eliminated just 40 minutes after the TV debut). Vipul & Arti were eliminated after arriving last at the pit stop at the Great Wall of China.
- Sarah reported in a post-race interview on The Finish Line that because of the Roadblock in the first leg a single team member could do a maximum of 7 Roadblocks instead of the usual 6 (as has been in place from Season 6). This rule was never mentioned on the show, although Karlyn performed 7 aired Roadblocks.
- A Fast Forward was offered in conjunction with the Intersection in Leg 8. Mary reported in a post-race interview on The Finish Line that a team could use a Fast Forward for a second time (in this case with a team that had not used a Fast Forward earlier in the race). In previous seasons, teams were allowed to use only one Fast Forward during the entire race.
- Rob & Kimberly hold the record for most consecutive finishes in the same position. They placed 3rd six times in a row.
- This is the first time in the history of the Race that an all female team, Lyn & Karlyn, made it into the final three. It is also the first time in the history of the Race that the final three is composed of all three possible gender combinations - two men (Tyler & James), a man and a woman (Rob & Kimberly) and two women (Lyn & Karlyn).
- Lyn & Karlyn is the first team to make it to the final three without finishing first in a leg, including the final leg.
- For the first time ever, the winning team was allowed to contact their families at the finish line and tell them they had won. In previous seasons, the winning team had to wait until their families actually saw them win on television.
- This is the second time a team who won the race arrived first in the first leg and final leg of the race in their season. The first team to do the same feat is Rob & Brennan from Season 1.
[edit] In-Race
- A Roadblock was performed in Leg 1. This is the first time a Roadblock has been aired in the first leg of a season (Season 1 had an ostrich egg eating Roadblock, but it was only shown as an extra feature on the DVD).
- In Leg 2, Peter and Sarah switched their Detour task twice. This is the first time a team has switched Detours twice and still finished first in the same leg.
- In Leg 3 and Leg 4 (Vietnam), all route markers were white and yellow instead of red and yellow. This was done because the flag of the vanquished South Vietnam also consisted of red and yellow stripes. This is similar to Season 3's Leg 11 in which the teams traveled through Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang, however, the route markers were made solid yellow in that season.
- In Vietnam, teams were not allowed to ride on motorbikes for safety reasons.
- At the beginning of Leg 3, teams were not given any money and were not permitted either to beg for money or to sell items. Instead, they had to earn money in the Roadblock.
- At the beginning of Leg 4, teams received 588,000₫ (dong VND - approximately USD $37) at the start of the leg. This was the first time in race history the cash distribution was made in a currency in other than US dollars.
- A Yield was available in one of the Vietnam legs, either Leg 3 or Leg 4, but was not used or aired, according to Mary on The Finish Line. [1] David & Mary were apparently the first team on the Yield mat, so it is speculated that the Yield could have been before the Roadblock in Leg 4.
- In Leg 6, Peter & Sarah, already in last, upon arrival at the Detour, received a clue instructing them to go directly to the Pit Stop. This has not been done to a team since Andre & Damon of Season 3. Additionally, Peter & Sarah were not received by a greeter at the Pit Stop. This is the first time since Pat & Brenda of Season 1 that a team has been eliminated without a greeter at the end of the leg.
- During Leg 6, Peter and Sarah's car had a handicap sticker from the state of California.
- While no Roadblock was shown for Leg 7, a Roadblock clue is clearly visible in Dustin and Kandice's hands in one of the stills for the episode on the show's website. [2]
- The prize for Leg 10 was given to the team that selected the "good luck charm" earlier in the leg that happened to match the one worn by the greeter at the pit stop. Unlike most former luck prizes, however, this one was awarded to the winners of the leg (Tyler & James).
- Also in Leg 10, the Pit Stop was held in or near Marrakech, Morocco, for a second time in the race's history. The first time was Season 3's Leg 6; however, the Pit Stop for this leg was in a different location than the one in Season 3. For this leg, the Pit Stop was in a nomadic Berber camp off the road from Ouarzazate to Marrakech.
- This marks the third time a team that has been Yielded has placed ahead of the team that had Yielded them. In Leg 10 Dustin and Kandice Yielded Lyn and Karlyn. However, Lyn and Karlyn placed 2nd while Dustin and Kandice came in last. In Season 6, Freddy and Kendra placed ahead of Adam and Rebecca after being Yielded by them and in Season 9, Joseph and Monica placed ahead of BJ and Tyler after being Yielded by them.
- In Leg 12, teams flew to Paris, France, for their intermediate destination. This is the first time in the history of the race an intermediate destination was outside the United States or Canada.
- The Finish Line for the race was located in Garrison, New York. This is only the second time in the history of the race it was not held in a major U.S. city. The first occurrence was in Season 8 where it was held in Lewiston, New York.
[edit] Post-Race
- David and Mary appeared on The View. David revealed that he had originally auditioned for Survivor. The couple also received gifts from the show, including vacations, a Ford Explorer, and a new house.[3]
- Just prior to returning to New York City for the post-race interview circuit, Lyn's house was ransacked.[4]
[edit] Prizes
Unless otherwise noted, prizes were awarded to the first team to check in for each leg.
Leg 1 - $20,000.
Leg 2 - A trip to Mexico, including swimming with dolphins and traveling in the forest on an ATV from Travelocity.
Leg 3 - A state of the art home theater system.
Leg 4 - A jet-ski for each team member.
Leg 5 - A home gym center for each team member.
Leg 6 - A trip to a resort in Jamaica.
Leg 7 - A motor-scooter for each team member.
Leg 8 - A trip to the Kona coast on Hawaii's Big Island, including a helicopter tour.
Leg 9 - A trip to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, including swimming with dolphins and cruising through the jungle canopy.
Leg 10 - A Sprint phone with a year's subscription for each team member. During the leg, teams were instructed to pick up a good luck charm from Antiquitte du Sud which they could exchange for some "good fortune" at the Pit Stop. The team with the charm that matched the one carried by the Berber greeter won this prize (though it so happened that the first team to arrive had the matching charm).
Leg 11 - A trip to Barbados, including swimming with turtles and a spa package from Travelocity.
Leg 12 - $1,000,000

- Chennai (Chennai International Airport) to Kuwait City, Kuwait (Kuwait International Airport)
- Kuwait City (Kuwait Towers)
- Kuwait City (Souk Al-Gharabally)
- Kuwait City (Al Sadiq Water Towers)
The first of only two Fast Forwards on the Race was to get the Fast Forward clue from a cluebox right next to a simulated oil fire, braving temperatures of over 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit. The Roadblock on this leg was to climb a ladder to the top of one of the Kuwait Towers and get a satchel filled with puzzle pieces. They then had to go to the ground and assemble the puzzle to reveal their next destination. The Detour on this leg was Manual or Automatic. In Manual, teams had to fill ten 110 lb bags of camel feed and stack them up. In Automatic, teams went to the Kuwait Camel Racing Club and had to use a walkie-talkie to make a voice activated robotic jockey whip a camel. They had to make the camel run a 140 yard course.

In this leg's Detour, teams had to choose between Salt or Sea. In Salt, teams had to search through three giant piles of salt for a salt shaker containing their next clue. In Sea, teams had to travel by motorboat to an island two and a half miles away and search the island using a map to find the boat's sail. After finding it, they had to attach it to the boat and sail back. While no Roadblock was shown for this leg of the race, a Roadblock clue is clearly visible in Dustin and Kandice's hands in one of the stills for the episode on the show's website. [2] [5]

The second Fast Forward on the Race was to go to a market and eat one full serving of cow lips, a local delicacy. The Detour on this leg of the Race was Long Sleep or Short Letter. In Long Sleep, teams had to deliver 8 covered mattresses through the streets of Antananarivo to a certain address. In Short Letter, teams had to work together to successfully make 28 pieces of paper. After the Detour, teams were not required to work together anymore. The Roadblock on this leg was to go to stairs filled with rubber stamp vendors and find four stamps that matched ones on their clues. Once finished, they would proceed to the Pit Stop, where their teammate was waiting.

In the first Detour, teams had to decide between Swamp This or Swamp That. Both options are methods by which Finnish athletes keep themselves in shape during the warmer months. Swamp This was cross country skiing through bog, and Swamp That was an obstacle course through bog. The Roadblock for this half of the leg was to search the mine for a marked dig site and get a piece of limestone. They then had to use tools to break it open to get their next clue, which was inside of it. As an additional task, each team member had to rappel face-first down from the top of the tower of the Helsinki Olympic Stadium.
On the second half of the leg, the Roadblock consisted of taking a Russian T-64 Tank through a training course. The second Detour was a choice between Make the Music or Find the Music. In Make the Music, teams went to Dance and Groove, a dance club in Kiev and had to perform a rap incorporating the names of all of the nations visited so far on the Race. In Find the Music, the teams had to go to the Ukrainian National Music Academy and find a copy of the sheet music of Tchaikovsky's Concert Fantasy for Piano and Orchestra, and then find a pianist to perform the piece for them.

- Ouarzazate (Atlas Film Studios)
- Idelssan (Café La Pirgola)
- near Marrakech in the Atlas Mountains (Nomadic Berber Camp)
This leg aired a Yield where Dustin and Kandice chose to yield Lyn and Karlyn. It was the first aired Yield of the Race. The Roadblock on this leg was to act like ancient gladiators by racing horse chariots. While racing, they would have to pull down two flags that match the color on their horse. This leg's Detour was Throw It or Grind It. In Throw It, teams had to use a pottery wheel to make two pots. In Grind It, teams had to use a large crushing wheel to grind olives, then pack them into bags. Each Detour selection only had three workstations, which were first come-first serve. After completing the Detour, teams drove on the road to Marrakech until they reached a marker, where they turned off into the desert to the camp that served as the Pit Stop.
[edit] Leg 11 (Morocco → Spain)
- Casablanca (Quartier des Habous)
- Casablanca (Mohammed V International Airport) to Barcelona, Spain (Barcelona International Airport)
- Barcelona (Parc del Laberint)
- Barcelona (Palau Nacional de Montjuic)
This leg's Roadblock was to eat camel meat. The participating team member had to purchase a half kilogram of camel meat, grind it, prepare it on skewers using a traditional Moroccan recipe, have a chef cook it and then eat it. The Detour for this leg was Lug It or Lob It. In Lug It, teams had to get into giant costumes known as "gigantes y cabezudos" and walk a distance of over a mile in them to find a female giant. In Lob It, teams had to search a giant pile of tomatoes and find one with a clue inside. While they were searching, locals threw tomatoes at them as done in the Spanish festival called La Tomatina.
[edit] Leg 12 (Spain → France → United States)
- Barcelona (Sagrada Familia)
- Barcelona (Barcelona International Airport) to Paris, France (Charles de Gaulle International Airport / Orly Airport)

- New York City (Daily News Building)
- New York City (Alamo)
- Garrison (St. Basil Academy) (Finish Line)
In the final Roadblock of the race, one team member had to perform a tandem skydive onto Omaha Beach. The other team member remaining in the plane would be treated to a surprise nosedive. Once finished, the person who did the Roadblock was taken to a train station in a military jeep, while the other team member had to take a taxi. In the last Detour of the race, teams had to choose between Art and Fashion. In Art, they had to go to an art studio, pick up a painting, and then search at the nearby square for a painter who would give them their next clue. In Fashion, teams had to go to Anatomy Fashion Studio and make a jacket to fit on a mannequin using the tools provided. Once satisfied, a lady would give them their next clue.
When flying to Paris, Rob & Kimberly and Tyler & James chose to fly to Charles de Gaulle International Airport, while Lyn & Karlyn chose to fly to Orly Airport. When flying to New York, while the other two teams managed to take the earlier flight to John F. Kennedy International Airport, Lyn & Karlyn took the remaining flight to Newark Liberty International Airport in Newark, New Jersey. Since the time difference between the two flights was too great, footage of Lyn & Karlyn completing tasks in New York City was not aired.
