The Alchemy Exam (Japanese: 「国家錬金術師資格試験」 - Kokka Renkinjutsushi Shikaku Shiken) is episode 6 of the Fullmetal Alchemist TV series originally aired 2003-11-08.

Edward and Alphonse begin their preparation for the Alchemy Exam in Central. At Lt. Colonel Mustang’s recommendation, they lodge for several months with Shou Tucker, a.k.a. “The Sewing-Life Alchemist." Tucker's title is due to the fact that he has managed to create actual chimeras (creatures made of the parts of two or more animals). One of his chimeras was even capable of speech. Ed and Al become fast friends with Tucker’s daughter, Nina, and her dog, Alexander, who enjoys tackling Ed.

The Elric brothers' cramming for the exam proceeds apace. Major Hughes and his expectant wife, Gracia, throw a birthday party for Ed, which is interrupted when Gracia goes into labor. The brothers aren't much help while Gracia waits for her husband to fetch the doctor, but Ed discovers he can perform alchemy without first drawing a transmutation circle when he accidentally re-heats a pan of water just by touching it. The Hughes' daughter Elicia is born without incident.

Both Elrics pass the written portion of the examination, but there is a problem. Only Mustang knows that Alphonse is but a soul attached to a suit of armor (everyone else must think him merely "eccentric"). If Al's lack of a body were to be discovered during the interview phase or the practical phase of the exam, the brothers could be charged with the crime of having attempted Human Transmutation. Al must drop out of the exam. During the practical portion of the exam, Ed's fast thinking, courage and his ability to transmute sans circles win him the position of State Alchemist.
