[edit] Overview
This game, like the previous, was a scrolling fighting game. It can be played with one or two players. The 2 player game has 2 modes: in mode A the players can hurt each other, while in mode B they cannot. In the game, the players move forward, fighting Shredder's minions. The colored foot soldiers have various attacks: for example, red soldiers throw shuriken, while pink soldiers hold spears. In addition to the standard attack (B) and jump kick (A, then B), the player can also throw enemies backward by pressing down and B, and other enemies can be hurt by a thrown foot soldier. Also, by pressing A and B together, the player can use a special attack, which depends on the turtle:
- Leonardo: spins around with his swords out
- Donatello: rolls briefly, then at the end, swings his staff at the ground
- Raphael: dashes forward in a headbutt
- Michelangelo: does a backward handstand kick
When the player loses a life, they can switch characters before continuing.
Michael Dooney is the creator of the original box-art.

[edit] Bosses
The bosses come mostly from the 1987 cartoon show, and include Dirtbag, Groundchuck, Slash, and Leatherhead, as well as Tokka and Rahzar (from the second TMNT movie), and of course, Rocksteady, Bebop, Krang and Shredder. Triceraton appears on the box, but is not actually in the game.
[edit] Codes
Like many NES games produced by Konami, this game includes a modified version of the Konami code. From the title screen, players could access a secret menu by quickly pressing Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, A, B, Start. Some versions of the game require the user to transpose the end of the code from "A, B" to "B, A".
From the secret options menu, players can start the game on any level and choose other options such as the difficulty level, the number of lives, and the background music for the first level. The two difficult levels available include Normal and Easy. The number of lives available can be set to 3, 5, or 7.
The music choices include the background music for each level. Players can use this option to hear various tracks used in the game.
