Talk:Theobald Smith
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Theobald Smith's Phenomenon or anaphylaxis was discovered by him through the use of guinea pigs which he injected with a small dose of blood serum containing diphtheria antitoxin. His experimenting with guinea pigs was conducted with the intention of determining a standardized or proper dose. He observed that a small dose of diphtheria antitoxin caused the guinea pigs to become highly susceptible to a somewhat larger dose of the same diphtheria antitoxin when injected several weeks later, perhaps causing the guinea pigs to die.
Other names for anaphylaxis include hypersusceptibility and protein sensitization.
