[edit] Trivia
- The show is called The O.C., and not Orange County as originally planned, because a movie of that name was released a year before the show premiered. The movie starred eventual O.C. guest star Colin Hanks.
- The O.C. is called by different titles throughout the world. For example in Germany, the show is called O.C., California and in France, Newport Beach.
- Though the show isn't shot on location, characters frequently mention popular Orange County hangouts like South Coast Plaza and Fashion Island. The Harbor School is a fictional private school which may have been inspired by the Sage Hill School, an elite private school in the hills of Newport Coast. There exists a Newport Harbor High School, but it is a public school. Furthermore, many of the other schools mentioned on the show, such as Mater Dei High School and UCI, are all actually there. Newport Union High School, however, does not exist. Additionally, the TV show's Balboa Wetlands appear to be based upon real-life Orange County's Bolsa Chica Wetlands.
- The Cohens' pool is only 4 feet deep, making the cast have to kneel to do scenes in the pool.
- Like their characters Summer and Seth, Rachel Bilson and Adam Brody are dating in real life.
- According to commentary, the writers originally were going to make Seth a part of the popular clique before they decided to make him an outcast, and the idea that Ryan was an illegitimate child of Sandy Cohen was also considered.
- Chris Carmack and Tate Donovan both were regular cast members during the first season while Rachel Bilson started as a guest star, even though Carmack and Donovan were not in every single episode during the season and Bilson was. Bilson was later added as a regular cast member, as was Melinda Clarke, while Carmack and Donovan were eventually dropped from the regular cast.
- The Newport Group seems to have been inspired by the Irvine Company, which owns a large portion of the real estate in southern and central Orange County.
- Many of the newer wealthy housing developments seen on the show are actually in Newport Coast (which was recently annexed by Newport Beach) and Crystal Cove, a few minutes drive down the PCH from Newport Beach. Appropriately enough, most of these developments are owned by the Irvine Company
- Adam Brody has been known to improvise some of his lines. This was hinted when Summer revealed that the star of "The Valley", Grady Bridges improvises his lines.
- Samaire Armstrong, who plays Anna, Seth's friend/ex-girlfriend, was only scheduled for one episode, but many fans liked the chemistry between her and Seth, so she was brought back for a few episodes. She wasn't on any season two episodes and returned to the show in season three when Seth was up visiting Brown and ran into her.
- Before the start of the third season, Adam Brody, Rachel Bilson, and Ben McKenzie were Punk'd by Ashton Kutcher and his crew members.
- Matt Ramsey is a real person. He's actually an editor for many episodes for The O.C.
- The magazine "Riviera" is a real magazine based in Newport Beach. Its alter ego has been a plot point on the show several times, most notably when Caleb was named its Man of the Year, and then again in 2006 when Sandy Cohen was also named Man of the Year, but turned the honor down. The real Riviera does not have a Man of the Year issue. Melinda Clarke Julie Cooper appeared on the cover of the real "Riviera" in February 2005, with a glamorous fashion spread/interview feature story in the issue.
- Julie and Kirsten's company New Match actually has a web site (http://www.ocNewMatch.com), which is also mentioned in the third season episode 'The Road Warrior'.
- In the episode, 'The Undertow', Seth reveals that his returned Brown interviewer was a fellow anime fan and that they were having a critical conversation based on the films Ghost In The Shell and Akira. As it happens, Ghost In The Shell is actually set in a place called 'Newport City'.
- The O.C. often makes references to past T.V. shows or movies that current cast members were involved with. For example when Seth discusses Ryan and Lindsay's relationship in the pool house. He says to Ryan, "Sick? As in girl in the Sixth Sense sick?" Referring to Mischa Barton's character in the Sixth Sense, Kyra Collins, the girl vomiting in the tent.
- Fans of The O.C. will recall that Season 2 of Fox's teen soap opera Seth Cohen (Adam Brody) creating his own comic book. Now life is imitating art as Brody teams up with Danny Bilson (his girlfriend's father) to make his own comic book called Red Menace. Red Menace is supposedly coming out in November starting with only six issues; depending on its popularity, the number of issues could increase.[1]
- In season 1 Jimmy Cooper says "i live with 3 vegearians" this reveals that kaitlin, marissa and julie are vegetarians
- When Marissa looks at the calendar and it says 'Ryan's birthday' it is revealed that Ryan's birthday is on a Sunday and a day befoe the first day spring, this means his birthday is on either February or March 19th (no other months near the beginning of spring have the 19th on a Sunday)
