Not a good article currently. There are no published sources given for this naive misunderstanding. Vermeer's heirs referred to this painting under its present title, The Art of Painting The actual subject of the painting is The Artist Painting an Allegory of Fame. Fame is identified by her trumpet. The brass chandelier and black and white tiles are commonplaces of well-off burgher houses in seventeenth-century Holland: Vermeer was a banker. The mask is part of the iconography of mimetic representation of reality, of which painting was a tool.
