[edit] Gameplay

Spider-Man: The Movie is a level based beat-em-up, with you playing as Spider-Man. Most levels are indoors, but some levels require you to web-sling from building to building. Levels are in "sections" with a different enemy for each, each section lasting about 3 levels. Each level, except for the last two, has a bonus screen after it. Generally, there are the bonuses "Time" (clear level in a set time), "Perfect" (Not take damage/detected) and "Style" (use as many combos as possible). Other level-specific ones are "Secrets" (Uncover a secret area), "Combat" (Defeat all enemies). You can gain, depending on difficulty, points on completing these tasks. On Easy mode, each bonus is 500 points, Normal is 700, and Super-Hero is 1000 each.

The basics controls are swinging, zipping, punching/action, kick, web, camera lock, and the Web Mod in Enhanced Mode. Depending on how you combine different buttons, it makes different effects. Wall-crawling is automatic, as is "stealth mode", where Spidey is in shadow, and therefore is undetectable by enemies. This is necessary to gain extra points in the game.

There are 21 different combat combos, with 4 web controls, each having a type of "upgrade" to each. Golden Spiders are used to gain these combos.

[edit] Deleted Level

According to an interview with a member of the Treyarch team in the Spider-Man: The Movie BradyGames strategy guide, there was a level created for this game that involved the player rescuing civilians from a burning building. However, due to the events of September 11, the team scrapped it, so they didn't appear insensitive when the game was released.

[edit] Enemies

Here is a list of enemies in the game.

  • Skulls Gang Member: Regular thugs. Seen in some different types, but they are all the same, and some of them carry guns.
  • Spike: The leader of the Skulls gang. He killed Uncle Ben and now Peter wants revenge. His is equipped with a shotgun and some flash grenades, but otherwise he is easy to beat. This is the first ever time Uncle Ben's killer was given a name.
  • Light Mechs: Robots designed to destroy. Made by OsCorp Industries, along with the Hunter Killers.
  • Hunter Killers: Robotic spiders. Created by OsCorp Industries, along with the Light Mechs. They apparently belong to the Vulture. You do not have to fight them throughout the game.
  • Shocker's Thugs: Regular thugs. Easy to beat.
  • Herman Shultz/Shocker: A classic member of Spider-Man's rogue's gallery. The Shocker is easy to beat, but he has some tricks up his sleaves.
  • Adrian Toomes/Vulture: Another member of the rogue's gallery. Basically, he is an old man in a vulture outfit. His levels are tough, but he is quite easy as a boss.
  • Vulture Bombs: Similar to the Hunter Killers, except they explode on impact.
  • Mac Gargin/Scorpion: Member of the rogue's gallery. Basically, he is a man in a scorpion suit. You must protect him from the hunter killers before facing off against him.
  • Sergei Kravinoff/Kraven the Hunter: Member of the rogue's gallery. Has a magical serum that makes almost him invincible. He first poisons you, then puts you through a maze of traps, then you have to beat him in combat before he gives you the antidote to the poison.
  • Norman Osbourne/Green Goblin: The main nemesis of the game. The Green Goblin is a super strong villain who uses various bombs and a glider to fight Spider-Man. Facing him on ground is hard, but he is relatively easy in the air.
  • Razor Bats: Green Goblin's weapon. Fought in the level "The Razor's Edge".
  • OsCorp Security Guards: These do not fight back, but pull the alarm if they see you.
  • OsCorp Super Soldiers: Robots who come after the alarm is pulled. Hard to beat, although webbing easily subdues them.
  • The Ultimate Weapon: Extremely big machine that can only be beaten if a certain number of shield generators are destroyed.

[edit] Cheats & Unlockables

In all versions of the game, cheats are accesible via the 'Cheats' option under the Specials menu. The effects of most cheats are reversible by entering them again, and the Green Goblin will laugh if the cheat is entered directly. The cheats improve the player (all fighting contols, infinite webbing), turn the game different (first-person mode, slow-motion), unlock character art or allow the playable character to be different (such as a gang member, Shocker's thug, Spike, a scientist, and a helicopter pilot). One of these cheats, which allowed to play as Mary Jane Watson, was removed in later editions, as near the end of the game, Mary Jane would kiss Mary Jane, which was objectionable. Tips and Tricks has covered this certain times.

[edit] Playable Green Goblin

A feature that has made this a popular game is the ability to unlock Harry Osborn as The Green Goblin as a playable character. This could be accomplished by beating the game on Hero or Super-Hero difficulty. The Green Goblin can jump, punch, and kick, as Spider-Man can (although his punches and kicks aren't as powerful), and can use his pumpkin bombs, razor bats, and Green Glider. However, a cheat way of getting the Goblin was to start a new game on Hero or Super-Hero, then enter ARACHNID to unlock all levels. Then, do the last level from the options menu (the last level is just a cutscene). The Goblin is now unlocked. Then, go to "new game" and select "No" when the menu asks "Do you want to reset your bonus points?" With a cheat code making it so easy to unlock the games biggest secret, this could be why it is so difficult to beat its sequel, Spider-Man 2

[edit] Reception

The critical reviews were good, with many critics considering it the best Spider-Man game yet[1]. Criticism fell specially on the indoor levels[2], Tobey Maguire's voice acting[3] and bad camera [4].

Sales were also huge (2 million copies of the PS2 version[5] and over 400,000 on the GameCube and Xbox [6] were sold in North America alone), allowing the game to enter the "Best-Sellers" of each console (PS2's Greatest Hits, GameCube's Player's Choice and Xbox's Platinum Hits).
