Riven: The Soundtrack is an album comprised of music written and performed by Robyn Miller for the popular computer game, Riven, the sequel to Myst. According to the liner notes included with the CD, Robyn, who co-created the game series with his brother Rand, composed all of the music working in the basement of Cyan's offices, recording it entirely using only a Yamaha VL-1 synthesizer and a Korg Trinity keyboard as instruments. The notes also state that many of the pieces composed for the games had to be shortened in order to work smoothly in an interactive environment, so the soundtrack release of these compositions include several full length versions of the tracks which are not heard in the game itself. Also included is a piece of music simply titled "Bonus Track" that, according to the notes, was "nice" but didn't find a good fit with any of the images in the game. The three character themes of the soundtrack correspond to Atrus, his wife Catherine, and his father Gehn. The music was released on a CD enclosed in a digipak which included a full color booklet with Gehn's journal fragment written in D'ni language and filled with game-related artwork and notes about the images and music.
It is interesting to note that every song on this soundtrack is in the key of G Minor, a key which is often associated with discontent, uneasiness, resentment, and dislike, [1] all of which are prominent in the game's storyline.
