    [edit] Overview

    [edit] Introduction

Although this game is a few years from release, the Infinity team has released a very playable combat prototype using their I-novae engine. Several Tech-Demo Videos of intended features have been released, and can be found on Google Video and YouTube, as well as from their web sites media section.

As with any new game in development there are some bold claims to features which while have been shown on the later games in the Elite franchise, haven't been duplicated by later games that have joined the "Space Game" Genre. These are namely a procedural universe and seamless planet-landings.

It has a reasonably sized fan base already, as evidenced by the forum on the games web site

    [edit] Development Process

The Infinity project draws on existing game ideas tossed about by fans of Sci-Fi and Elite alike, and the development team encourages user input to shape the forthcoming game.

    [edit] Game Engine

The I-Novae game engine used in Infinity features procedurally generated environments based on Perlin noise, LOD progression, and a fully dynamic game world. This allows for seamless transition between an infinite number of unique persistent environments such as solar systems, planets with full surface detail, and structures with fully detailed interiors. Within the dynamic game world the game is able to mimic real life situations, such as when borders of countries and stars may change from a single event.

    [edit] Public Participation

The Infinity project is fairly unique among commercial games in that there is active public participation in the game development process. Co-operation with a core group of designers and artists in the joint production of vehicles, artifacts, massive space ships and stations to populate the games universe. Though there are no guarantees that these items will make it into the game [1].

    [edit] Combat Prototype

The combat prototype is a multiplayer game play test release server intended for the testing of bugs, game physics, balancing, and proofing the combat system. Patches are released regularly, most of which fix bugs, but some add content. The combat prototype has been tested by many eager players, and as the fan database grows, so does the prototype.

Game played in the prototype is focused on destroying the enemy battleship. When a player first logs on, they are in spectator mode. By pressing the space bar the player is then randomly assigned a team (red or blue) until the end of the match. They may then choose a space ship to fly into battle. Among the 8 choices of ships available are the Varden, which is a 3-winged fighter class, the Makon, which is a light frigate class, and the Carrier, which is very large, but costs many points to play as. A player starts with 250 points, and gains more by defeating enemies. The bigger ships are more expensive than the smaller ships; the Varden is 100 points while the carrier is 10,000.

Version 2.0 of the Combat Prototype has been announced with an early 2007 release date. It will feature a lot more ships, game play refinement and the ability to mine resources.
