[edit] Fair use
Chowbok tagged this image as possibly violating the first criterion of fair use, in that it "illustrates a subject for which a free image might reasonably be found or created". I'm a little puzzled by this—none of images I find with Google appear to be free, and I cannot "reasonably" travel to Alaska to create one. However, I am completely sympathetic to a conservative application of fair use, so I am willing to be educated. —johndburger 05:00, 16 November 2006 (UTC)
- Well, it's less a legal issue than a philosophical one; we want Wikipedia to be as free as possible, so that means removing fair-use images that could be replaced with free ones, even if there's no problem legally with using the fair-use one. As for travelling to Alaska; it's not so much that you need to travel there as that someone does (or, more reasonably, a Wikipedia editor who already lives there can take her picture). Since this is a politician, though, I would bet that simply writing her and asking her if she'll release this photo under the GFDL or a similar license (like cc-by-sa) would get results. It's a rare politician who isn't willing to jump through a few hoops for free publicity. —Chowbok ☠ 17:43, 16 November 2006 (UTC)
