Free Willy 3: The Rescue (1997) is the second sequel to the 1993 film Free Willy, the first being the 1995 film Free Willy 2: The Adventure Home.
[edit] Plot
In this film, Willy is threatened by a group of whalers. Jesse is now 16 and is working on a boat as an orca-researcher along with his old Indian friend Randolph and a scientist named Drew. There is also a newcomer, Max, the son of a whaler, who is opposed to his father's profession. Along the way Willy reunites with Jesse, who teams up with Randolph to try and save Willy, his mate, and their unborn calf from the whalers, and to help get Max's father to realize that the orcas, and all whales, are valuable creatures in their own right.
[edit] Commentary
This film simultaneously returns to the original formula of the franchise and seems to eschew its earlier claims of "edginess", focusing exclusively on an audience of younger children. The unsavory elements of the first film are absent, while the family subplots (which, as before, attempt to draw parallels between the situations of the humans and the orcas) are continued and enhanced without the unnecessary distractions of the first sequel. Perhaps this was inevitable, considering that the actors who played Nadine and Elvis in Free Willy 2 were unavailable for this film. Indeed, this movie seems to follow more from the animated television series than from its Hollywood predecessor in terms of character development and plot, while suggesting (unlike any of its more radical predecessors) that the villains are, in fact, redeemable.
