Evolution: The World of Sacred Device is a console role-playing game for the Sega Dreamcast console. It was developed by Sting and published by Ubisoft in North America. In Japan it was published by ESP (Entertainment Software Publishers).

Evolution is a dungeon crawling game that follows the adventures of Mag Launcher. Mag Launcher and his companions use Cyframes, technology discovered in ancient ruins. These Cyframes are sought after by adventurers who explore caverns to find them.

Combat in Evolution is non-random and occurs whenever the character touches an enemy. The battle system uses 3D graphics and is turn-based, with each individual combatant having their own turn.

This game and the sequel was compacted into Evolution Worlds on the Nintendo GameCube.

[edit] Main Characters

  • Mag Launcher- Mag Launcher is the 16 year old protagonist of the series. His birthday is April 22. Mag is the last son in a family of Adventurers, the Launchers. His parents never returned from an adventure they went on one day, and he has been raised by Gre, his butler, ever since. Mag gets his assignments from the Society, an organization dedicated to studying ruins, and he gets around on his family's seaplane. Mag is a Cyframe user and has a Cyframe shaped like a large hand called Aeracomet.
  • Linear Cannon- Linear Cannon is Mag's partner in exploring ruins. She is 17 and was born February 3. No one in the game knows where she came from, she appeared on Mag's doorstep one day after his parents had disappeared with a letter from his father, telling Mag to protect her. Linear never speaks, but she learned to play the Ocarina from Mag. She never uses any Cyframe, but a frying pan and has healing powers to use in battle.
  • Gre Nade- Gre Nade is Mag's butler who's raised him since his parents disappeared. Gre is 58 years old and his birthday is August 30. Gre uses a gun and martial arts in combat.
  • Pepper Box- Pepper is an attractive young woman who uses her looks to "innocently" seduce others, though she despises people that pay attenton to only her appearance. Her age is never actually revealed, keeping the guise that "a woman's age should be kept secret", but is believed to be somewhere in her late twenties. Uses a bazooka Cyframe called Moranna Solnier.
  • Chain Gun- Chain is Mag's female rival, but becomes his partner early in the game, and joins his party. Chain has a jet pack with a large blade attached, called Flamingo, and uses fire-based magic attacks. Chain is 15 and her birthday is October 25.
  • Eugene- Prince of the 8th Imperial Army, he is the main antagonist of the story, obsessed with taking Linear for himself.

[edit] Story

Mag and Linear are the greatest of friends, never apart from each other. The story begins with them assigned by the Society on a treaure hunt in ruins . After battling some monsters (the first fight in the game) Mag (the player) notices a mural of the Angel of Light. His rival, Chain Gun, suddenly jumps in and steals the treasure atop the mural, causing Mag to lose credit for the find. Mag and Linear return to the main town and confront the Society about how Chain took the treasure. The player then finds out that Mag is deep in debt and to pay it off he must search the many ruins that surround the town.

Eventually, after Mag has cleared a certain number of ruins (the player can pick these ruins out of those assigned) he receives a letter saying that the 8th Imperial Army led by a Prince Eugene wishes to to confer with Astol Launcher, Mag's father. Since his father is still missing, Mag decides to go in his place to represent him. The player is then forced to go to the port with Linear. Mag meets with the exalted Prince Eugene, only to find out he is not as the people say: Eugene becomes rude towards Mag when he learns that Mag knows nothing of a famous Cyframe Evolutia, and his eyes start to wander towards the shy Linear and assumes that Mag had brought her as a present. Infuriated and offended, Mag storms out of the ship and goes home (with Linear, of course) and from then on acts with a grudge towards Eugene's name.

The story progresses very little between this point and the end. Eugene eventually comes to town and tries to seduce Linear, though this turns into a comedic point rather than a drastic event, as he isn't that handsome and tends to think very highly of himself. Mag is later asked to come to the army again for another conferrence, but doesn't stay long for memories of the last time he was there. Even later, the player sees a scene where Eugene is in a room with some soldiers; they are talking about Linear. Eugene tells them that he wants her at any cost, and the player finds out that it isn't just for lust...

After Mag has cleared all of the ruins save one, He comes home to Gre being held at gunpoint by three soldiers and Eugene ready to grab Linear. Mag runs into the airfeild by the Launcher estate, trying to escape the army. Even though he successfully defeats several tanks (yes, TANKS) Eugene hits Mag with a tank shell and knocks him unconscious, afterwards kidnapping Linear.

After awaking from a sleep that lasted several days, Mag hurrily runs off to save Linear. After a raid through the battle ship that the army is on, Mag finds Linear tied to a pole. He tries to untie her, but Eugene steps in with a MegaMan esque battle mech and insists that Linear herself IS Evolutia. In dibeliefe and anger, Mag fight and beats Eugene, frees Linear, and escapes from to the top of the battleship. When there, he notices that there is one lifeboat left. They walked towards the boat, but a gunshot is fired and Mag falls to the ground. Eugene stood there with a pistol as a last resort to take Linear back. Mag regains strength and punches Eugene off of the ship. Linear heals Mag of his gunshot wound and they float away from the exploding ship, revealing that she is, indeed, Evolutia.
