[edit] Storyline
Gerrard and the Weatherlight had won the battle at Koilos, and Barrin had suffered his death. Urza then unleashed the Apocalypse on Dominaria.
[edit] Mechanics
- Multicolored Cards - The Invasion Block prominently featured multicolored cards (cards with more than one of the five colors), which had not been frequent in Magic since Visions. Unlike Invasion and Planeshift, Apocalypse focused on cards with "enemy" color pairings (colors opposite one another on the color wheel) as opposed to "friendly" color pairings (adjacent colors).
Apocalypse reprised many cycles found in Invasion, including enemy-colored "Bears" and "split cards." Apocalypse's single most important cycle of cards were the enemy-colored "painlands," which promoted the set's theme, power level, and popularity.
[edit] Notable Cards
- Spiritmonger - A large multicolored creature, it was the first card designed by the players outside of cards made by Magic Invitational winners, a contest which would be echoed in later sets.
- Pernicious Deed - A tournament-worthy board-sweeper enchantment.
- Fire/Ice- The most powerful split card, Fire/Ice exemplifies versatility, interacting well with many cards including Force of Will, Merchant Scroll and Isochron Scepter.
- Gerrard Capashen - He is the last of the Weatherlight crew to be portrayed in his own card.
- Vindicate - An elegantly designed card, Vindicate destroys any permanent in play for just three mana.
- Pain Lands - The Five Enemy-Colored Lands that dealt one damage to the controller of the land when tapped for colored mana.
- Fungal Shambler - The prerelease card, unusual in that Wizards chose to print the prerelease version in Sanskrit. The card was preceded by Invasion's Raging Kavu in Latin and Planeshift's Questing Phelddagrif in ancient Greek.
