[edit] Set history
Tenth Edition is currently being developed by the R&D division of Wizards of the Coast. As with the 8th and 9th editions of the core set, part of the development process for the 10th edition includes allowing fans to select certain cards for inclusion in the set. This process began in mid-June 2006 and continued for 10 weeks. A few cards that were selected to appear in the set were chosen by a voting system on the Wizards of the Coast website.
[edit] Mechanics
Core sets contain only a select number of mechanics chosen from among the dozens of mechanics which have been printed in expansion sets.
The following keyword mechanics have been confirmed by Wizards of the Coast to be in 10th Edition: First Strike, Flying, Protection, Regeneration and Trample.
The following keyword mechanics are assumed to be in 10th Edition based on their inclusion in previous editions: Equip, Fear, Haste, Landwalk and Vigilance
As part of their "Selecting 10th Edition" promotion, Wizards of the Coast gave fans the chance to manage a part of the set's brand. The results gave the Roman numeral "X" over the number "10." A Roman numeral has not appeared as the brand symbol since 6th edition.
[edit] Notable cards
The reprinting of popular cards that had been removed from recent basic sets had proved one of the most popular aspects of Eighth Edition and Ninth Edition, and even more fan favorites have made their way into the new set.
- Hurricane: Last printed in Deckmasters 2001, Hurricane defeated Earthquake in the first "Selecting 10th Edition" vote.
- Incinerate: Last seen in Coldsnap themedeck Aurochs Stampede, this card was replaced by Shock and Volcanic Hammer. With its return, it is doubtful that Volcanic Hammer will return.
- Lord of the Pit: Last seen in Fifth Edition, Lord of the Pit was removed from Sixth Edition due to a temporary removal of trample from base sets, and Demons from the game as a whole. Demons have been back for a few years now, and Trample returned to the basic set in 9th edition.
- Mind Stone: Last printed in Weatherlight, defeated Guardian Idol in week 9 of "Selecting 10th Edition"
- Mogg Fanatic: Last printed in Tempest, this was a key card in Sligh decks for years, and was long seen to be too good to reprint. It defeated Kird Ape in week 5.
- Paladin en-Vec: Last printed in 9th Edition, Paladin en-Vec defeated Auriok Champion in the second "Selecting 10th Edition" vote.
- Shivan Hellkite: Last printed in Urza's Saga, defeated 12 other dragons in a vote.
- Time Stop: Last printed in Champions of Kamigawa, beating out Spelljack.
- Troll Ascetic: Last printed in Mirrodin, Troll Ascetic defeated Ravenous Baloth and Erhnam Djinn in the third "Selecting 10th Edition" vote.
- Platinum Angel: Last printed in Mirrodin, beating out Worship.
- Loxodon Warhammer: Last printed in Ninth Edition, beating out Empyrial Plate.
- Nantuko Husk: Last printed in Ninth Edition, beating out Fallen Angel.
- Crucible of Worlds: Last printed in Fifth Dawn, beating out Forgotten Ancient.
