That Guy (concerts)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"That Guy" refers to the person who arrives to a concert or musical performance while wearing the T-shirt of the band that he or she intends to see. This is usually considered a concert faux pas, due to the fact that simply attending the concert in the first place should be proof enough of someone's interest in a band, thereby making the shirt unnecessary. It is an example of one of society's unspoken rules.
[edit] Examples of That Guy
That Guy can come in various different forms:
- Arriving at the concert while wearing the band's T-shirt.
- Arriving at the concert while wearing the shirt of an individual band or band member's side project.
- Wearing a shirt purchased at the concert (perhaps at the band's merchandise table) over the shirt originally worn to the concert.
[edit] Popular Culture
The phrase "That Guy" came to prominence through the 1994 film PCU. In it, Jeremy Piven's character, Droz, says the line:
- "What's this? You're wearing the shirt of the band you're going to see? Don't be that guy."
In addition to the film, at least one clothing company has capitalized on the concept of That Guy, selling "That Guy" shirts [1]. That Guy has also found life on the internet, with several webpages devoting articles to it [2][3].
