Thane, Alaska
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Thane is a neighborhood in the City and Borough of Juneau in the U.S. state of Alaska. Located along Gastineau Channel, it begins one mile south of downtown Juneau and consists of approximately three dozen homes spread over the last two miles of the road. All the homes are located on Thane Road, which comes to a dead end about six miles (10 km) south of downtown Juneau.
Thane is a quiet and picturesque neighborhood of secluded houses and friendly neighbors walking their dogs.
It was named for Bartlett Thane, Manager and Director of the Alaska Gastineau Mining Company formerly located in the area.
Thane Road is notoriously narrow and poorly maintained. There are at least 30 waterfalls along Thane Road's six miles and each of these corresponds to a good "bump" or two. Because of its location beneath steep mountains along Gastinueau Channel, Thane road is frequently blocked by avalanches in the winter when snow gathers in the river valleys.
At the end of Thane Road is the trail head to the Dupont Trail. This is a lovely hike through lush rainforest just above the Gastineau Channel. The Dupont trail emerges onto a beach 2.5 miles south of the road where the remains of an old dynamite storage facility and a dock stand as reminders of the gold mining era.
