THACKLEY AFC - THE STORY SO FAR

SEASON 2006/2007

Thackley A.F.C. was founded in 1930 as Thackley Wesleyans and joined the Bradford Mutual Sunday School League. Between 1930 and 1938, when the Club joined the Bradford Amateur League, it had won this league on four occasions. On entry into the Bradford Amateur League, the Club changed its name to its present one, and in 1948, moved to its present ground, "Dennyfield".

It had established itself as one of the leading clubs in the League by winning it on five occasions and lifting the League Cup twice, when it joined the West Riding County Amateur League in 1952. The Club were members of the West Riding County Amateur League until 1966, achieving a hat-trick of League Championship wins in 1958, 1959 and 1960.

In line with its policy of gradual advancement, the Club became members of the West Yorkshire League in 1966, and won the League Championship in 1967. This success was followed by an application for membership to the Yorkshire League, which was achieved in 1968.

It remained in membership of the Yorkshire League until its merger with the Midland League in 1982, to form the Northern Counties East Football League. Thackley being placed in the Premier Division of this league, they are now the only club to have maintained Premier Division status since the league was formed.

During its 76 years existence, the club has won the West Riding County Cup on two occasions, in 1974 and 1975 and the West Riding County Challenge Cup twice, in 1964 and 1967. It has also lifted the Bradford & District Senior Cup no fewer than thirteen times.

Two former players who progressed to the Football League are Ian Ormondroyd, Bradford City, Aston Villa and Leicester City, and Tony Brown, Leeds United, Doncaster Rovers and Scunthorpe United.

The club achieved one of its major ambitions in 1981 when it negotiated the purchase of the land on which the ground is situated, from Bradford Metropolitan Council. The 7.5 acres of land gives plenty of scope for future development.

New dressing rooms were erected in 1990 and in 1996 the ground was totally enclosed with a concrete fence, in line with League ground grading standards.

Unfortunately, within weeks of the completion of the fence, vandals burnt down the wooden stand. This has now been replaced with a new 200+ seater stand.

A toilet block has been built and last year saw the completion of hard standing around the ground. With a scheme to increase the covered accommodation, it should make the move up the Pyramid a formality, should the opportunity present itself.

Unfortunately, two years ago, the food bar suffered a similar fate to the Stand when it, too, was burnt down by vandals. A new catering room has now been erected, thanks to local company, ACORN CONSERVATORIES, and a donation from Thackley Juniors. The new facility came into use in the middle of last season and Eddie and Mary Williams are once again producing the best burgers in the district.

This coming season our project is to upgrade our floodlighting system to make sure we don't fall foul of the league's ground grading requirements.
