State Highway 249, or SH 249, is a generally north-south highway in southeastern Texas between Pinehurst (with a northern terminus at the intersection of FM 1774 and FM149) and northern Houston via Tomball.
SH 249 is also called the Tomball Parkway from Tomball until its intersection with Beltway 8 and West Mount Houston Road inside the Beltway until its southern terminus at Interstate 45. A potential future expansion of the road into the Bryan/College Station area is often referred to colloquially as the Aggie Expressway, after Texas A&M University, located there.
The highway was originally part of FM 149. As the road's importance grew, especially after Compaq Computer Corporation located its headquarters campus near its intersection with FM 2920 [2], it was felt that the road needed to be named a state highway. Since there already was a SH 149, the number 249 was assigned to minimize the confusion caused by the change.
