September 26, 2006 Byron Nelson died at the age of 94. Born in Waxahachie, Texas, he was often referred to by the nickname "Lord Byron." An American PGA Tour golfer between 1935 and 1946, he is mostly remembered today for having won 11 consecutive tournaments and 18 total tournaments in 1945. He retired at the age of 34 to be a rancher.

September 13, 2006 Formor governor of Texas, Ann Richards, died Wednesday night at her home in Austin, surrounded by her family. In March 2006, she disclosed that she had been diagnosed with esophageal cancer.

September 6, 2006 Flags fly at half-mast across the state as Nelly Connally, wife of former Governor John Connally, is laid to rest in Austin. The last surviving occupant of the limousine in which John F. Kennedy was shot in Dallas, in 1963, she died on September 1st at age 87.
