Kyoto, Japan is world-renowned for its ancient and beautiful temples and shrines. It is arguably the cultural center of Japan, and its holiest city. Many of the most famous, most sacred, or most historically significant temples and shrines in Japan are in Kyoto.

In addition, many of these temples and shrines are included in the UNESCO category of "Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto (Kyoto, Uji and Otsu Cities)" as World Heritage Sites.
