Tell Me Why was listed as the second single to be lifted from the album Forever. However due to poor sales of Forever, the single was later canceled. Promotional singles had already been circulating throughout Europe and Australia and other countries. Even though the single was canceled in the end, it fared well and became a club hit.
The lyrics are a bitter response to the other side of a broken relationship, although it may or may not be a romantic one. Due to the vaguity of the pronouns may in fact be about the departure of group member Geri Halliwell: "We started with dreams/We started a team/But you weren't as true as you always seemed/You promised to love/No matter what/Yet you turned your back and walked out on me."
