Ted Townsend was born in Santa Barbara, CA on 24 December 1967. He is the only resident of Santa Barbara that has Friedreich's ataxia, a rare autosomal recessive disorder. He has been a wheelchair user since 1989.

He is followed by Dr. Susan Perlman at UCLA Medical Center Ataxia Clinic.

In 1992 he stuied at a campus of Shandong University in Jinan, Shandong Province, Peoples Republic of China(中华人民共和国) for three months. It was a study abroad program through Santa Barbara City College. The program, titled 'The Three Faces of China' was a political science and anthropology program. They visited various locations in the PRC, Hong Kong, and Taiwan .

Currently, he is a student at the University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB). Ted is a Global Studies major.
