Teatro Comunale Giuseppe Verdi

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Teatro Comunale Giuseppe Verdi is located in Trieste, Italy. It was built in 1801 as the Teatro Nuovo by the architect of Venice's La Fenice opera house and has 1,400 seats with a classic horseshoe-shaped auditorium.

By 1821 its name was changed to the Teatro Grande and it was under this name that the theatre was the site of two Verdi opera premieres: Il corsaro in 1848 and Stiffelio in 1850, both featuring the soprano Giuseppina Strepponi, who Verdi married in 1859, in the leading roles.

Within days of his death in 1901, the theatre was once again renamed, this time in honour of Giuseppe Verdi. It was extensively restored between 1992 and 1997.
