Teaching English in Taiwan

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

English language education in Taiwan is a big business among the wealthy. Those who can afford it often send their children to all-English kindergartens, and almost all Taiwanese students have attended some kind of after-school English program, called buxiban. Many buxibans, or cram schools, are chain schools, and almost all hire native English speakers as teachers, mostly from the United States, Canada and Australia.

Teachers can expect to make between US$20,000 to US$50,000 per year, and teaching for the long-term brings the possibility of opening one's own school and making several times that, if successful. Cost of living and general living in Taiwan[[1]] and taxes [2]are much lower than in the US and Australia as well.High quality national health care[3] is provided under most contracts. However, pollution and dangerous traffic usually cut a teacher's stay to a year or less. The Taiwanese government issues approximately 6000 work visas [4]every year to English teachers.

Unlike South Korea and Japan, there are no unions for foreign English teachers in Taiwan. Labor law violations though, may be reported to the Taiwanese government's Council of Labor Affairs [5].
