[edit] Art Style

Let's at least make a note that it is SIMILAR to pixar art style, namely the style shown in the Incredibles.

  • Team Fortress 2's character and overall game setup bears an uncanny resemblance to the atmosphere of the Worms games series - especially that of Worms 2-4. I wouldn't be surprised if the people working on TF2 once worked for Team17 or, at the least, are very fond of the Worms games.

(they even have a moo sound (as in all the Worms games) in their trailer - it doesn't get more obvious than that!)

[edit] Small revision

Did a couple small wording changes to eliminate some POV in the article --Chris Law Also, I closed a italicized bracket that was spilling over into text.

OK, but you don't need to tell everyone. ;-) Anyone interested can already see what's going on through the History tab or their watchlist. --Tom Edwards 21:28, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Double standard

How come this article has got ALOT less mentions of its long development time than the Duke Nukem Forever article ? Why the double standard ?

Because nobody has written it. You can add something if you like, so long as it's meaningful and objective. --Tom Edwards 18:19, 23 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Information Leaks

Half life2 source code was never released. It was leaked at one point, but never released.

It is a part of the Source SDK. It's used to create all mods. --Tom Edwards 09:07, 15 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Requires Clean Up

Seeing as Valve has avnnounced that TF:2 is coming out with Half Life 2: Episode 2, this article requires a major overhaul. References to it currently in vaporware status need to be removed and the like. the cheat 03:09, 15 July 2006 (UTC)

They should categorically NOT be removed. The History heading should be preserved and the current contents of the article merged into as is appropriate, however. --Tom Edwards 09:07, 15 July 2006 (UTC)
I've updated the introduction, but theres a load of other tense changes and updates required thoughout the rest. EAi 20:13, 15 July 2006 (UTC)
Changed the "Media: Unknown physical media and Steam" in the 'box' to "Media: Steam, DVD and Blu-ray", assuming it comes on the same disk as HL2:Episode2 for all platforms, it cannot be released on CD, so it is a safe assumption that these are the correct types of media. EAi 20:42, 15 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] I'm disappointed

I mean, first it was delayed since 1999, and now they're making a bunch of god damn cartoon characters? What the hell is this crap?!

I like it, frankly... if I want realistic mod, I will play CS or DoD or even BF2. the Fact that TF2 is cartoon like is even better than I thought. George Leung 05:53, 15 July 2006 (UTC)

Well, yeah, but I hate it to be this cartoony. Sure, the original TFC was unrealistic, but cartoonish just draws the line. I'm disappointed in Valve. That's saying something because they've never failed to please me in the past ...
Well, everyone else I've seen has really liked it. Even most of the hardcore fanboys of TF and TFC do... Surprising really! EAi 20:43, 15 July 2006 (UTC)
I like it so far. Has a unique look to it. But let's see how it plays in gameplay videos when we get some. Maybe there will be getting some exagerrated movements and stuff since we have cartoonish graphics. Either way, I'm getting TF2 since I'm buying Episode Two later this year (if released by then). --Gamer007 21:04, 15 July 2006 (UTC)
I, for one, am quite disappointed. It looks like Valve is, once again, throwing another gimmick into one of their games to promote their Source engine. In this case: cartoony graphics (PIXAR!). For Half-Life 2, it was physics (GRAVITY GUN!); for Lost Coast/Episode One, it was the over-proliferation of HDR (I'M LOOKING AT THE SUN AND NOW I'M BLIND!); for Day of Defeat: Source, it was some sort of ridiculously advertised movie-style filters that never seemed to be fully-realized (FILM GRAIN!). For Episode Two, it seems to be large, expansive, outdoor, Battlefield-type levels (NEW FLORA RENDERING!). For the upcoming Portal game, it appears to be, well, erm, portals (PORTALS!). And the less said about Half-Life: Source, the better. The only game from Valve that seems to be the exception is Counter-Strike: Source. However, Counter-Strike is basically a gimmick in of itself.
I was not around for the original Team Fortress, but I was a big fan of Team Fortress Classic during its golden age (Remember when TFC had more players and servers than CS? That was true at one time, I swear). I was somewhat uncertain of the new style the old TF2 was using, but over time I grew to like it. But now Valve has thrown it out the window forever, and we're stuck with this. If Valve really wanted to go in a different direction, they could have done much more to stay within the defined TFC-style at least somewhat. These new characters look absolutely nothing like their previous counterparts. But, ideally (for me, anyway), I would have preferred they kept the original style completely while updating everything to the quasi-realistic look that all Source games have. For example, I think the mod Fortress Forever is a perfect example of what Valve could have done. I think that team's renderings of the TFC items, objects, and classes are absolutely flawless. Instantly recognizable as TFC. I particularly like the looks of the maps (Something we have yet to see of Valve's new TF2). Call me old-fashioned, but I don't believe there was any reason to justify TF2's radically altered art direction. It's just wrong, people. It's just plain wrong.
Anyway, that was my rant on TF2. Um, very nice here article, though! MarphyBlack 15:28, 17 July 2006 (UTC)
It's sort of depressing reading that and knowing exactly what is going on in your mind. It reminds me of an article in The Escapist a while back - let me see if I can find it. --Tom Edwards 17:52, 17 July 2006 (UTC)
I was wrong, the article wasn't about what I thought. Suffice to say, then, that this isn't the first time technology has taken somebody's attention off the game itself. --Tom Edwards 18:15, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

Man... TF2 with cartoon isnt Team fortress =( --Manny 00:32, 20 July 2006 (UTC)

Shooting a teammate in the arse with a sniper rifle and watching him soar across the map and onto the enemy battlements screams "cartoon" to me. 68.9.205.60 14:36, 22 July 2006 (UTC)
Looking at screenshots of Half-Life in game magazines from around early 1998 reveals that Half-Life first was supposed to have cartoony comic characters - I was disappointed when I saw that at some point the graphics changed to a more serious look. I'm happy with the cartoony look of TF 2! --Abdull 19:15, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
I know this isn't the appropriate venue to discuss this but I'm absolutely thrilled! I played TFC nearly non-stop and never found that fun factor again in the otherwise decent CS, DOD and other mods. When I saw the 1999 TF2 promotional pics I was deeply disappointed in the direction it was taking. I never liked the more-cartoonish versions of the skins they released (the half-naked HWGuy for example) later on but these skins look much more likable. And it seems like fun! --Stalfur 12:27, 7 September 2006 (UTC)

Greatly disappointed. Valve beter no to release this.

[edit] Pixar

Valve have a guy from Pixar working on TF2 - thus the cool character models. However, that fact is useless without a verifiable, public source. Anyone seen one? --Tom Edwards 09:07, 15 July 2006 (UTC)

I've not seen this written anywhere. I've heard it said to be pixar-esque, nothing more. EAi 19:55, 15 July 2006 (UTC)
I added the pixar reference because the gamespot article said it, it's not my idea. The article was also cited, so I think we're OK LilDice 21:11, 16 July 2006 (UTC)
Oh woops you meant you were looking for a source that says valve has a guy from pixar doing modeling, haven't seen that yet, but I expect we will soon enough. LilDice 21:12, 16 July 2006 (UTC)
Haven't seen anything about Pixar working with Valve. The article only said it will have a Pixar-esque look to it. But like LilDice said, we should get some more info soon. I hear next week (Ok, now this week since it's Sunday) Valve will release some. --Gamer007 23:17, 16 July 2006 (UTC)
Yup, more info this week. "New videos from Episode Two, Portal, and Team Fortress 2 will be released next week." - From the Steam News posted on July 14. --Gamer007 23:41, 16 July 2006 (UTC)
I know they have a guy poached from Weta Digital working on it. Didn't know about a former Pixar employee. - Hahnchen 00:41, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Cel Shading

I originally mentioned the blurb about cel-shading and TF2 maybe using it. Really that was my fault, since I didn't read that anywhere it would be considered original research. I'm thinking about just taking that sentence out until we know one way or another....thoughts? LilDice 17:44, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

Is it actually cel shaded? Someone put TF2 in the Cel-shaded wiki. I don't think it's cel-shaded, but that's just me. --Gamer007 02:55, 20 July 2006 (UTC)
I really don't think so, I changed the wording to say it's using a new lighting technique developed in-house at valve which was from the IGN article that is cited I believe. I'm sure there will be some press about the graphics once we get closer to release time, so I would probably remove TF2 from the cel-shaded animation page until we know for sure and can cite a source. LilDice 16:59, 20 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Trailer!

Now there is a trailer! http://www.openxbox360.com/modules.php?name=Download&F=videos/tf2_teaser.avi&M=47fef7770904f95e26c7413674cd3786&G=Team%20Fortress%202 --Forcen 17:19, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

VALVe does like taking forever to put it on their media section of Steam. =/ What's the point of it if you can get it out in the open anyway? --Gamer007 20:26, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
It has better resolution. ;)

[edit] Leipzig Games Convention 2006

There is a video on TF2 from GC. Is it allowed to be posted here?

here is the link to the vid - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ueuhj9WsDzk LilDice 12:26, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
Can't someone do a short description of what we've seen about each character (like in the TFC article)? We've seen some new impressive stuff there, so I think it deserves it.

[edit] The sequel of...

Okay, it seems many editors are divided on whether Team Fortress 2 is the sequel to the Team Fortress mod for Quake or Team Fortress Classic by Valve.

Should they BOTH get a mention in the first sentence? I think the engine change deserves a mention. Pixelface 23:39, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

If you read the history section, TFC was only a quick port in lieu of TF2. There isn't an informed argument for it being a sequel to TFC, it's just borne out of people not realising TF existed pre-Valve. --Tom Edwards 10:37, 2 September 2006 (UTC)
