[edit] Personal Attacks
Hello, Tbkflav, welcome to Wikipedia! I noticed that User:Abu badali had removed an image from your user page without your acknowledgement. While this is generally not a good idea, the user in question had a valid point: As per WP:FUC point #9, fair use images shouldn't be used outside the article namespace. Normally, this would not be a problem, but you have appeared to have added a section to your userpage which attacks Abu Badali. I am asking you to please remove this section, as personal attacks are not tolerated on Wikipedia. Thanks! Shadow1 17:26, 6 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] My response posted to Shadow1 discussion
Hi - you added a note to my user page in regards to an opinion I wrote about a specific user's actions. First off, I appreciate you leaving the note! I have taken your advice and removed the section in question. After re-reading my opinion on the user I realized I wrote it when I was quite furious. I have removed the section entirely...I could definitely see how that would be seen as a personal attack. While the intent was simply to question the user's etiquette, it ended up as a blistering diatribe. Second, I just want to explain the issue in a bit more detail. While the user did have a valid point according to the WP:FUC policy (point 9), new users such as myself may not be up to speed on all policies yet. In addition, given that at the time the image was not tagged as copyrighted, I really didn’t think there would be an issue. As for consistency to WP:FUC , The user apparently violated the noncompliance portion of the WP:FUC policy by not leaving proper notification and or acknowledgement. I probably wouldn't have cared if this was a regular article that I contributed to or wrote, but given that it was my personal talk page it just seemed a little bit like the user overstepped his/her bounds. This user's page is full of notes from frustrated wikipedians encountering the same issue. Anyway, I am droning on...but thanks again for your professionalism and courtesy regarding your request. Take care, and keep up the good work!--Tbkflav 01:56, 7 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] I'm glad it's all ok now
Hi, Tbkflav. I'm glad it's all ok now. I knew it wouldn't be a good idea to awser you before you cool down. Everybody heats up sometimes, don't worry. About the Non-compliance section on WP:FUC, I'm afraid you misread it. I talks about an image baing deleted from Wikipedia's servers, and not simply removed from some page (article or user's page). Also, it talk about notification of "the editor who uploaded the image", and not the one who misused the image.
Indeed, I have dozens of messages from "frustrated wikipedians", but only twice I had receiced a personal attack. Anyway, now I believe you're a well hearted user. Always try to keep cool. Take good care. Best regards, --Abu Badali 21:14, 7 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Message left for Abu Badali
After re-reading my comments above and on my user page I realized I had written it when I was a little hot under the collar...put it this way, it had been a bad day! In any event I have removed the inflammatory comments from my user page after a quick note from Shadow1 and re-reading the comments myself...I could definitely see how they would be interpreted as a personal attack. While my original intent was not to launch a personal attack but to question why the image was removed, as well as to highlight the value of notation before changing something, the reality was that the comments were not professional and overly intense. You did have a valid point according to the WP:FUC policy (point 9) and that has been noted. As a new user, I am still familiarizing myself with the various WP policies and this event highlights their importance. If I recall correctly the image appeared to be fair game at the time and didn't seem to be protected work, hence my use. I probably wouldn't have cared if the change had been made to an article I had contributed to or written rather than my user page. If a note had been left as to why, the point would have been moot. In any event, thank you for posting a note later on and for taking my abuse in stride! The good thing is we learned something: For me, it’s not to go off half cocked, and to be a bit more vigilant with respect to image use. For you, it’s to post a note prior to changing a user page. Take care, and best wishes for continued success. --Tbkflav 03:00, 8 September 2006 (UTC)
