I am a pediatrician and medical geneticist with interests in languages, writing and editing. I am from the Baltimore area and went to Friends School there. Then went to Dartmouth College and the Sorbonne, majored in French, and received a BA from Dartmouth. I spent three years in the Army, studied Russian for a year at the Armed Forces Language School in Monterey, California and was stationed in Germany as an interpreter-translator (French-German-Russian).

Back in civilian life, I went to Boston University to take the courses needed to enter medical school. I went to the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry in Rochester, NY and received my MD from Rochester.

I trained first in Pediatrics in Rochester and Seattle and then in Medical Genetics at the University of Washington. I was on the medical school faculty at the Universities of Rochester, Washington, Oregon, Harvard, Arizona, Nevada and Nice (France).

With my wife Barbara, I founded and directed the Southwest Biomedical Research Institute in Arizona, now part of Genzyme, Inc. I have taught at a number of institutions including Harvard Medical School and, most recently, served as Professor on the Faculty of Medicine, University of Nice, France where I worked in the Laboratory for the Molecular Genetics of Human Cancers, a unit of the CNRS (the French National Center for Scientific Research).

Over the years I have written a number of biomedical articles and several books, served on medical journal editorial boards and reviewed articles for biomedical journals. I was Co-Editor-In-Chief of the Webster's New World Medical Dictionary, Year 2000 First Edition and Year 2003 Second Edition.

Outside of medicine, I enjoy classical music and jazz, write poetry, do some gardening, ride a bike, have a continuing interest in languages and work as a writer and editor.
